Feb 13, 2026

This year, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. (@sapporobeer.jp) and Hokkaido University, both celebrating their 150th Anniversary1,   are collaborating to create a new beer. Over 100 years ago, Hokkaido University successfully bred Japan’s first beer barley variety, “Hokkaido University No. 1.” Sapporo Breweries adopted this research achievement and incorporated it into their beer production. “Hokkaido University No. 1” is said to have significantly contributed to improving the quality of domestic beer ingredients as Japan’s first artificially hybridized beer barley variety. Using “Hokkaido University No. 1” as one of the ingredients, Sapporo Breweries and Hokkaido University will develop a special beer commemorating their milestone years.
