古河講堂は1909年、古河家からの寄附金により建設された建物の1つです。これによりキャンパス内の教育施設が充実し、北大が前身の札幌農学校から大学へと昇格する一助となりました。
建物は、フランス・ルネサンス様式の優雅さとアメリカン・ヴィクトリアン様式を融合させたデザインになっています。林学教室だったので、建物の要所要所に「林」の文字がモチーフとして施されています。
昭和初期に他の8棟が解体された後、古河講堂は現存する唯一の建物となり、国の登録有形文化財に登録されています。
2026年に行われた第76回さっぽろ雪まつりでは、北海道大学創基150周年を記念し、古河講堂が大雪像として再現されました。

Furukawa Hall was built with donations from the Furukawa family in 1909, along with eight other buildings. Their construction contributed to the elevation of the Sapporo Agricultural College to university status by expanding the educational facilities on the campus.
Its design blends the elegance of French Renaissance architecture with elements of American Victorian style. As it originally housed the Department of Forestry, the Chinese character for ‘forest’ (林) is incorporated as a decorative motif throughout the building.
After the demolition of the other eight structures in the early Showa era, Furukawa Hall is the last one standing, being preserved as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Hokkaido University, Furukawa Hall was sculpted in the snow at the 76th Sapporo Snow Festival.
