This photograph was taken around 1928 during the early years of the Faculty of Medicine. The stone pillars of the North 13 Gate stood as one of the main entrances to Hokkaido Imperial University at the time, which once led to the Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
Nearly a century later, the North 13 Gate still stands in the same spot. The former hospital main building has since been demolished, and its original site is now around the parking lot of Hokkaido University Hospital. A beautiful avenue of ginkgo trees now lines the nearby path. During autumn, the leaves on the trees along the path turn golden yellow, welcoming students and visitors alike.
While the campus has transformed greatly over the years, this gate has quietly witnessed it all.
